Boat Ride with Uncle on the Connecticut Shore

Boat Ride with My Brother on His Boat
September 2003
Branford and Farm River, East Haven, Connecticut

Ages and Grades: 6 (1) and 3 (Pre-K)

Thrills of the day: older son riding in the front with the wind whipping in his face, going in high tide under a bridge that we could touch with our hands, and younger son driving the boat.

There is something about the water that soothes the soul. Daily, with my ex-boyfriend we'd go out on the water after getting off work for the day. It was a fantastic way to spend the early evening. I miss that. A boat soaks up a lot of money and so my husband and I never put our resources into that hobby. Boating on Long Island Sound then was something that I got to do on rare occasions with my brother. I grew up within walking distance of the shore and always said I never wanted to not live on the edge of the land, but sometimes real life intervenes and changes our old priorities.

Thanks to the freedom of homeschooling we were able to do fun things that schooled kids were too busy to do like take this boat ride on a school day. My brother was self-employed then so he took a half day off work to take us out on the sound.
