Spotted: Street Art by Shepard Fairey

While watching the documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop last month I learned of Shepard Fairey's initial foray into street art with an adaptation of a photo of the wrestler Andre the Great which is referred to as "the obey giant". Andre's face was combined with the word obey in uppercase letters as if propaganda. Later only the face would appear on the street art. This image is sometimes printed onto stickers and stuck around cities.

Fairey is the artist who created the Obama campaign poster in red, white and blue with the word HOPE which made the news when Fairey was accused of copyright infringement. I didn't know anything else about Fairey until I watched the documentary which I blogged about here.

Anyhow while in New Orleans last week I was walking down St. Louis Street in the French Quarter when I spotted one of the Andre stickers. I could't believe it. Here are some photos of it.
